Senior Expert in aerodynamics, thermodynamics and acoustics

What excites you about Stadler?
Solving aerodynamic problems. Train aerodynamics is remarkably diverse and interesting. To give you an example, we are currently working on reducing the drag of a double-decker train, improving the cross-wind stability for a hydrogen unit, optimising the snow-plough for one of our Nordic project, while, at the same time, studying ballast projection and increasing the heat exchange of a break resistor for a mountain train. The variety of topics is truly exciting for an aerodynamicist like myself, and, this is without mentioning that we are working with state-of-the-art simulation methods, are collaborating with wind tunnel operators and have the chance to validate our findings with full-scale tests.
How did you develop at Stadler?
Stadler offers a programme for the development of specialists in the different fields of engineering. During the last 10 years, I had the opportunity to develop the aerodynamics, thermodynamics and acoustics team at Stadler as well as joining the European Normalization Committee for train aerodynamics. That has been a challenge I have truly enjoyed and, today, I am surrounded by amazing colleagues. Before joining Stadler, I worked 10 years in academia, the last 5 years as an associate professor in fluid mechanics at the University of Sydney in Australia. When Stadler built its first high speed train, the SMILE, it was clear that the aerodynamic studies had to be carried out internally and this project was appealing to me. I have never regretted making that carrier shift. Stadler has always given me the opportunity to stay connected with academia and research, which is central for me.
Why would you recommend Stadler to others?
Every evening, when leaving the factory in St. Margrethen, I can see the trains we have built. I am very proud to have contributed to their design and believe we have fantastic products. This feeling is something I hope everyone could have when finishing their working day.
